INTRODUCTION

Kinsa Judo was founded in 2018 by Ashley McKenzie and Fiona Chan who were club mates whilst training at the Camberley Judo Club.  We wanted to create a judo coaching business to share our passion for judo by bringing classes to schools and to set up a local club for Haslmere, Surrey and Bordon, Hampshire. There are 10 classes per week (term-time) for approximately 150 students.

Ashley stepped away from the business in 2019 to focus on qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and he also represented Jamaica at Paris 2024 (an impressive 4 time Olympian).

Fiona returned to judo ten years ago at the age of 40 with a goal of earning her dan grade (black belt). 2024 proved to be her most successful year to date with the following achievements:

– GB Senior Squad at -52kgs, (one of the oldest judoka to have achieved this)

– gold medals at both the Veteran British and European championships

– achieved her competitive 3rd Dan

– as awarded the British Judo Association – Veteran Female Athlete of the Year

– silver medal at the Veteran World Championships

– GB rankings list at -52’s, -57’s and -63’s

Fiona is also a level 4 qualified Personal Trainer and a Youth Strength and Conditioning Coach and also acts as the Secretary for Southern Area Judo which helps to promote judo within the South of England and look after the interests of Southern-based judoka. Fiona now competes and trains under Adrian Dove at Osaka Judo Club, based in Aldershot.

Fun fact: “Kinsa” refers to a seldom-used term in judo which referees used to consider the numer of ‘kinsa’ (attacks) made by judokas in ‘shiai’ (competition) and first heard by Fiona when competing at the Veteran World Championships which were being held in Sardinia in 2018.

I look forward to the opportunity of welcoming your child on the tatami!
